I'll admit the drinks are not why I book people on the Paul Gauguin, but they're a small pleasure I've come to look forward to. Having travelled these islands, I notice the difference when a glass is made with real Tahitian fruit instead of pre-mixes. On board, everyday beverages are largely included, which changes how you relax, you stop counting and start savouring. My habit is a cold fresh juice at the stern before dinner while the ship pulls away from an island. Here's what I'd actually order and where.

What's worth ordering

I gravitate to anything built around fresh island fruit, passionfruit, pineapple, lime, because that's where the kitchen is at its best. Fruit grown in Tahiti and the islands tastes brighter in a simple juice, and I'd rather have that than a fussy drink with ten ingredients. At dinner, sparkling water with a squeeze of lime suits the fresh fish perfectly, and a hot tea or coffee rounds off the meal. Keep it simple and fresh and you'll enjoy it more.

Where to relax, and when

My favourite spot is the stern at sail-away, when the light goes gold and the island shrinks behind you. The main lounge is the livelier choice in the evening, with music and a bit of a crowd, while the pool deck suits a lazy afternoon with something cold to sip. Because everyday drinks are included, I tell clients to treat these spots as part of the rhythm of the day rather than a splurge. That mindset alone makes the trip feel more generous.

Juices, soft drinks, coffee and tea are generally part of the fare, with some premium items and special requests sitting outside that. I never quote exact pricing because it varies and is worth confirming when you book, but day-to-day extras rarely add up the way they do on bigger ships. If you have a favourite drink or dietary need, mention it to your travel planner ahead of time. Small ships can sometimes stock a request.

Frequently asked questions

Are drinks included on the Paul Gauguin?

Everyday beverages such as juices, soft drinks, coffee and tea are generally included in the fare. Exact inclusions vary, so confirm the current details when you book.

Can the crew handle special drink requests?

Yes, on a ship of around 330 guests the crew happily accommodate requests, and there's always fresh juice, water and soft drinks on hand.

Is there a food or tasting experience?

There are usually informal tastings and demonstrations during the sailing. Schedules change cruise to cruise, so I'd check the daily program once aboard rather than planning around it.
